Opening for Black · ECO B20–B99

Sicilian Defense in chess

1.e4 c5

Black fights for d4 without copying White. The game is unbalanced from move one: the most played defense against 1.e4, to play for a win with Black.

The ideas

Black

  • Trade the c-pawn for White’s d-pawn (…cxd4).
  • Use the half-open c-file.
  • Play on the queenside with …a6 and …b5.

White

  • Use the lead in development.
  • Attack the black king.
  • Occupy the d5 square.

Main variations

Najdorf variation

2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6

The queen of Sicilians: one small move, …a6, that keeps every option open.

Dragon variation

2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6 6.Be3 Bg7 7.f3 O-O 8.Qd2 Nc6

The fianchettoed g7 bishop, and a race of attacks on opposite wings.

Alapin variation (2.c3)

2.c3 d5 3.exd5 Qxd5 4.d4 Nf6 5.Nf3 e6

The most common Anti-Sicilian. With …d5, Black develops without trouble.

Rossolimo variation (3.Bb5)

2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 g6 4.O-O Bg7 5.Re1 e5

After 2…Nc6, White avoids d4 and targets the c6 knight.

By the numbers

White’s second move after 1.e4 c5

  • 2.Nf357%
  • 2.Nc39%
  • 2.Bc48%
  • 2.d47%

2.Nf3 dominates: it’s the gateway to the Open Sicilian. Out of 366.6 million Lichess games.

Traps to know

The Siberian Trap

In the Smith-Morra Gambit, the …Qc7 and …Ng4 battery targets h2: White loses the queen.

With Black, remember …Ng4 then …Nd4.

The Magnus Smith Trap

With the bishop on c4, recapturing on e5 opens the d-file: Bxf7+ then Qxd8.

With Black, don’t recapture on e5 while f7 is targeted.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Sicilian Defense good for beginners?

It’s rich but needs theory in the open lines. To start, pick a single variation, such as the Najdorf or the Dragon, and learn it well.

Which Sicilian variation should I choose?

The Najdorf for flexibility, the Dragon for attack, the Taimanov or the Kan for less theory. Prepare an answer to the Alapin (2.c3) too.

How do I remember the Sicilian lines?

By replaying them on the board instead of rereading them. ChessFlux makes you replay your repertoire move by move, comes back to what you forget, and checks in your games whether you actually play them.

Stop forgetting it in your games.

Add the Sicilian Defense to your repertoire and replay it a few minutes a day.
